Enjoying the
tropical, yet arid island of Corsica |

One word aptly describes the landscapes of Corsica: dramatic!
For those of you who need to brush up on your geography, the
island of Corsica is located south of France and west of Italy
in the beautiful, clear, blue-green waters of the Mediterranean
Sea. It is a 4-5 hour ferry ride from Nice, France, which is
where we departed from last Friday after a quick overnight in
that city in a hotel not worth mentioning. Technically
Corsica belongs to France, but its culture, food and people are
an interesting mix of both French and Italian, due to its
proximity and its history. Our home exchange apartment is
a pleasant apartment in an ugly modern complex in the
northeastern city of Bastia. As we quickly learned, the
most interesting and dramatic coastline, with its red rocks that
glow in the late afternoon sun and the green and blue waters so
clear you can see your feet at the bottom - where they take all
the postcard pictures - exists on the other side of the island,
and Bastia is an un-touristy, but a bit run-down sort of place.
(This is what happens when you don't do your home exchange
homework, I guess!) So we took an overnight trip to the
western side of the island and it was non-stop gorgeous
scenery in the mountainous interior as well as the rocky
coastline. The roads throughout the island are narrow and
winding due to the mountain that runs down the enter of the
island but almost every road is designated as a scenic route and
they certainly don't disappoint! Sadly, our photography
skills are such that the pictures don't come close to doing it
justice but we'll just have to let them try to speak for
themselves... .
