Yesterday was Queensday, the annual celebration of the Dutch
Queen's birthday, and our friends Daniel and Leonne from Gouda
came up to celebrate with us. As many of you know, we met
Leonne and Daniel over the internet through a home exchange
website, and in the process of arranging an exchange, discovered
that we had much in common. Their English skills are
impressive and after almost 4 months of trading lengthy,
entertaining and information-packed e-mails, it was finally time
to meet in person our wonderful new friends from Gouda.
They proved to be as enjoyable in person as in writing and we
had a fun day with them wandering the crowded streets, sometimes
fighting our way through the throngs of orange-clad celebrants.
There was much drinking and merry-making and a popular activity
during this celebration is to cruise the canal on boats (really,
on anything that will float) equipped with loud dance music (one
boat even had a live band!) and lots of beer. It's like a
floating tail-gate party! It was a great day and we look
forward to meeting up with Daniel and Leonne on Wednesday when
we move on to spend some time at their home in Gouda.
