Happy New Year
everyone! San Miguel turned out to be a great place to
ring in 2006, with a great dinner and a band and fireworks in
the Jardin. Our friend Wendy and her Chilean boyfriend
Eddie hosted us for dinner at Wendy's apartment, where we had a
superb meal of salmon, mixed vegetables (they actually know how
to make them taste good here) and rice. We brought the
wine, some of the best we've had in Mexico at a price of about
$4 per bottle. After an important discussion comparing the
English and (amusing) Spanish names of what seemed like every
Looney Tunes character in existence, we walked down to the
Jardin for the fireworks show and to enjoy the live band playing
there.
While we waited in
the heat of the crowd for the fireworks to begin, everybody
(except us) had big, two-foot-long sparklers that they were
holding in the air and the atmosphere was lively. At
midnight (ok, they were a couple minutes late, but this is
Mexico, after all), the fireworks began exploding directly above
our heads. We could see the guys setting of the fireworks
about 100 feet away from us. It was all very casual (so
very Mexican), but the display was fantastic. We had to
tip our heads back all the way in order to see the traditional
fireworks exploding over us. There was also a large
"waterfall" of sparks off to the side that was so mesmerizing
that we failed to get a photo. The fireworks that spelled
out "ADIOS 2005" and "FELIZ 2006" were pretty cool too.
All the smoke from being so close to the explosion of fireworks
only added to the excitement.
After the dazzling
midnight display, we made our way over to the dance floor area,
where a popular Mexican band was playing Latin music. We
danced until about 1:00, when we decided to call it a night and
walked home the 4 blocks up the hill to our apartment. All
in all, this was one of the best New Year's Eve's in the history
of Scott and Caroline (LeAndra and Dylan, your NYE blow-out a
few years ago still holds the record!).
Earlier in the week,
we had the pleasure of attending two excellent concert/shows: on
Christmas Day, we went to a free chamber music concert at an
intimate, old theater here in town and on Friday we enjoyed a
spectacular Flamenco show, in which our friend Eddie performed,
playing drums. It was truly amazing and, with the
exception of the dancers' costumes, we both agreed that it put
the show we saw in Seville, Spain to shame!
In between all these
musical performances, we've been busy shopping for wonderful
handicrafts with which to decorate our PV condo (the San Miguel
condo will come later), in preparation for our trip there later
this week. Caroline is having a blast, but she's not so
sure about Scott! |
