Home Again!

06/19/05 - Puerto Vallarta, MX

Back at Casa Andrea's in PV after an 11-day trip to Guadalajara and Michoacan state

After a tiring 8-hour drive from Caleta de Campos (we made awesome time, leaving at 8am sharp on a Sunday morning), we arrived without incident at Casa Andrea's and are getting comfortable in the 2-bedroom apartment here, since our old room is undergoing renovations.  We just checked in on the condo and things are looking good.  We'll be going over in the morning to discuss the progress with Alfredo and the crew.  With any luck we'll only be here for another week and then we can escape the stifling heat and humidity once again!

Relaxing in a fishing village and visiting a surf camp on the beautiful Michoacan Coast

Since we've had reports that our workers have returned to work at the condo, it's time to head back to PV.  As it happens, Victoria and Cynthia, the innkeepers at La Casa Encantada in Patzcuaro also own Quinta Cynthia, a not-too-rustic little oceanview bungalow on the Michoacan coast not too far up the road (north) from Ixtapa/Zihuatanejo.  (We're working on getting our map updated for those of you who are interested.)  We had been thinking of  taking the coastal route back to PV rather than going back the way we came through Guadalajara, since we've been wanting to see more of the coast, and Quinta Cynthia turned out to be at a good stopping point (or so we thought).

So here we are, relaxing on our breezy balcony that overlooks a lovely little bay.  It's the slice of heaven Caroline has been dreaming of (although admittedly a little on the rustic side for her taste) since before leaving SF.  Caleta de Campos is a rustic little village but does have several small groceries (sort of) and restaurants (if you can call them that) in the 3-block "downtown" area, but nothing too exciting.  The main attraction here is the unspoiled beach (it is lined with casual restaurants, complete with hammocks in between the tables, that are yours for the day for the price of a Coke (or whatever you desire).

Saturday morning we traveled a few minutes up the road to a tiny surf camp called Nexpa.  We had been told it's a fun place to eat breakfast and to watch the surfers.  Nexpa is world-renowned among the surfing set and sees many international visitors, although there is nothing there except for a campground, a couple beach restaurants, some very basic cabanas set right in the sand in a row on the beach and some awesome surfing waves!  Of course, each cabana has at least one hammock on the front porch and a few have beds right out on the second floor balconies.  The vibe there was friendly and totally laid back; everybody at the restaurant (almost all thirtysomethings, some with kids and/or dogs in tow) seemed to know each other.  The food was awesome and totally cheap, although we way over-ordered, since the portions were HUGE so our meal wasn't all that cheap!  Caroline had the best banana pancakes of her life and Scott loved his French toast with gigantic side of fresh fruit salad (all his favorites - no gross "filler" fruits).   The melon agua fresca was amazing, too.

Since our arrival, we've learned that we're a little further away from PV than we originally thought.  We're still 10-12 hours away, so we'll be leaving bright and early (well, relatively speaking) tomorrow and will drive as far as we can, spending the night probably in Manzanillo or Barra de Navidad.  Wish us luck!
