Cold Carolina, Chilly Chapel Hill
01/18/05 - 01/19/05 - Chapel Hill, Durham & High Point, NC (Photos)

University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, Durham in the snow & the Furniture Discovery Center in High Point, NC - a quick drive-by

Left Bethesda on yet another freezing day, decided to skip Monticello (Tom Jefferson's pad) and just head south to rid ourselves of the perma-chill.  We drove to Chapel Hill, where we Priceline'd a great deal, and it was just as cold as D.C.!  A quaint town and pretty UNC campus (although surely much prettier in decent weather and with leaves on the trees).  Had some coffee at the Carolina Coffee House before heading to Firebird Rocky Mountain Grille (did a citysearch for restaurants with fireplaces) for a delectable dinner - even got to sit right in front of the fireplace.

Checked out around 11am on Wednesday, started driving around Durham when it started snowing giant snowflakes.  Did a quick loop around Duke's campus (it's not everyday you get to see Duke under a blanket of snow) and decided to head toward Charlotte.  Stopped in High Point to see the "Furniture Discovery Center", a sort of hands-on museum where they show you how furniture is designed and made. It turned out to be much more interesting than I (Scott) suspected it would be - but I had very low expectations.  Staying in Charlotte tonight at the Holiday Inn (another Priceline coup - a $90 room for $38).  We'll head out to Chad & Dawn Benton's tomorrow in Marietta, GA, although we're really looking forward to going further south where the temps are known to be above 30 degrees.
